Norfolk & Suffolk Heather

It’s coming up to that time of the year again when all the Heather is in bloom so I thought I would share a few of my favourite sites to shoot in Norfolk & Suffolk. I hope to add a selection from the peak District to a different post later in the week.

Gone For Good

I took a workshop participant to Covehithe / Benacre on the Suffolk coast the other week to shoot the famous dead tree that sits in the sea here. I was quite shocked when we got there to find the tree has since disappeared. Walking a bit further up its plan to see the tree has been washed up onto the beach. I have often taken people to this fantastic location whilst in the area and over the years I have seen some people get some amazing shots. It’s one of those locations I have only ever shot once myself though, I just always assumed I would come back at a later date and give it a proper go, but sadly that is never going to happen now. Oh well here are my only two efforts of the tree, shot at sunrise about four years ago.

Southwold Pier

Southwold Pier, Suffolk

Southwold Pier has always been a bit of a bogey location for me, I have plenty of good shots of the beach huts and Southwold harbour but after lots and lots of visits to the Pier for sunrise over the years I have never quite had the right conditions, either too much cloud or not enough. Fortunately in November I finally got a few shots I was happy with and it’s a location I can now tick off my list.

Southwold Peir is a bit of a strange location for a dawn shoot as you can often be joined by numerous other photographers all jostling for the best position on the beach. There must have been about five or six photographers on the beach this particular morning and after a few quick shots of the sun rising I soon moved to the back of the pier where I had the beach to myself.

Favourite 10 images from 2011.

Here are my favourite 10 images from 2011. It has been my busiest year yet, a bit too busy with workshops and commercial shoots with hardly any free days so I did not have too many chances to get out and shoot much myself.

I hope everyone has a fantastic new year and thank you to everyone who has viewed this blog and my Facebook page throughout the last few months, I hope to add a lot more content throughout 2012.

Herringlfeet Smock Mill, Suffolk

Herringfleet is a unique black smock drainage mill on the Suffolk side of the Norfolk & Suffolk border. The Mill was built around 1820 and is one of the fine st mills to photograph in the UK. The mill stands in the middle of the Herringfleet Marshes and photographs well at all times of the day.

Here the mill is illuminated at last light reflecting in a small dyke in front of the mill.

This image was captured at sunrise following an overnight winter hoarfrost. If you look carefully it’s possible to see the reeds covered in tiny delicate ice crystals. By placing one of the reed stems in front of the sun I was able to illuminate problems with lens flare from the rising sun.

Here the mill was captured on a summers morning from the back of the mill, the fantastic colours of the old iron pumping shed next to the mill can be seen here.

Warm evening light illuminates the reeds and the mill.

This image sat on my hard drive unprocessed for two years before I processed the raw file. In the first month of sending it to image libraries and my customers it appeared on five magazine front covers around the world.

Windmill Advent Calendar Days, 16, 17 and 18

I had a few internet connection  problems on Friday, finally back online now. I am only just now getting a chance to add the windmills for Friday, Saturday and today, I have decided to get rid of some of the less photographic mills from a landscape point of view for today and save some of the better ones for the next week.

For Day 16 I have chosen Stanton Mill in Suffolk

Stanton is a postmill originally dating back to 1751, the mill was moved to its current location around 1818. The mill is still in fantastic working condition today and producing flour that is sold locally.

For Day 17 I have chosen Southwold/ Walberswick Mill in Suffolk

This picturesque drainage mill stands besides the River Blyth near Southwold Harbour. I can find very little info on this mill, but it’s well worth a visit for some nice scenic images.

For Day 18 I have chosen Billingford Windmill on the Norfolk Suffolk border

Billingford mill located near diss was built around 1860. The last miller to work the site was Arthur Daines who used windpower until 1956.  Today the mill is in the hands of the Norfolk Windmills Trust. The mill is currently undergoing restoration work and only the stocks are currently attached to the mill.
